Thanks to technological progression and the ultra-competitive business landscape today, project management has never been a more important concept to get right.
Staying ahead of the curve is always the goal for businesses, but how can this be achieved?
According to the results of a PM Solutions poll, organisations with project managers who exude quality skill sets get better results. In fact, this could calculate to close to 50 per cent higher output than their lower skilled counterparts.
PM Solutions surveyed more than 300 project management professionals who operate in a variety of industries including manufacturing, finance, government and healthcare. The company's goal was to find out what project management skills are in demand and which need improving.
Based on the results, the top skills illustrated by project managers were associated with leadership. For example, those that display integrity and honesty as well as creating positive relationships through trust and respect are in demand at present.
PM Solutions also released a list of skills that need improvement - elements that should be part of any project management recruitment effort moving forward. This included risk management, communication, strategic planning, change management and benefit realisation.
President of PM College Deborah Bigelow Crawford said project managers are under more stress than ever so it is up to employers to create a supportive and productive working environment.
"Companies continue to demand more of their project managers, who are responding with an increased focus on delivering value," she explained.
"And organisations are helping project managers deliver value by implementing training programs that address basic project management competency as well as advanced training programs, especially in leadership and business alignment."
